REBUILD Globally Exports Locally Made Sandals from Haiti to the US
Comfortable, high quality recycled sandals for sale at McKevlin’s Surf Shop
(Port-au-Prince, Haiti) On March 2nd McKevlin’s Surf Shop in Folly Beach, SC released their newest brand of sandals: REBUILD Globally. 2012 Business Innovation & Growth award winners, REBUILD Globally employs Haitian earthquake survivors to create beautiful handmade sandals from recycled tires and repurposed leather. McKevlin’s, an institution in Folly Beach and one of the oldest surf establishments on the east coast, is carrying 3 models of REBUILDER sandals for men and women.
“It is a really exciting time for us and for social enterprise in general. REBUILD is honored to be doing business with an establishment as time-tested and respected as McKevlin’s,” enthuses REBUILD CEO and Founder, Julie Colombino.
Hanging on shelves next to Reef and Rainbow sandals, REBUILD globally is one of a “couple “harder-to-find” brands that have a serious conscience,” according to the McKevlin’s Surf Shop website.
“I hope McKevlin’s customers will be impressed by this new generation of REBUILDERs. Our designers have streamlined the sandals and included a layer of locally-sourced memory foam—making the sandals lighter and extremely comfortable,” states Colombino.
Using tires removed from Haiti’s littered streets and up-cycled leather jackets, REBUILD artisans have been turning rubbish into artisan-quality footwear since 2010.The 2013 generation of REBUILDER sandals are available in adult and child sizes and comes in four colors: cream, caramel, chocolate, and licorice.
Colombino continues, “REBUILD globally is not only about sandals. REBUILD works to reunite families; it provides education opportunities for young people; it gets Haitians out of tents and into houses. The proceeds from sandal sales afford our artisans with dignified and gainful employment that changes their entire lives.”
